Plan each burn for 3-4 hours, OR long enough for the melt pool to reach all sides of the vessel. This helps it from tunneling and leaving wax around the sides of the jar. A small amount of wax on the sides is normal. As the wick burns down, the sides of the vessel heat up and usually melts most all the

Keep cotton wicks trimmed to 1/4"
Keep wood wicks trimmed to 1/8” to 1/4”
Remove any debris before lighting
If your wood wick is stubborn to light and is properly trimmed, hold the lighter/match to it for 8-10 seconds
Keep away from drafty areas (active fans, doors or open windows)
